NICOLE HEARNES

About

I was raised in a small rural area in South-eastern Ontario, where I learned to have a great appreciation for nature and the outdoors.  It was there that my imagination and creativity began to emerge.  I was introduced to Robert Bateman's work by the second grade, and during high school I became interested in the works of Salvador Dali; both of these artists have had a large influence in my creative work.

Some common elements in my artwork have been animals, fantasy, and surrealism.  I've always been very fascinated by wildlife, and I enjoy depicting it in my art.  I was drawn to fantasy from a young age and it has been an interest that has carried over into my art.  For the past decade I have been battling and working through severe anxiety problems; in recent years I have found it helpful to translate my feelings into my art in surreal and dream-like pieces.

I'm currently focusing on finishing some acrylic paintings, but also often enjoy the art of pyrography (wood-burning), sculpting, and carving.  I hope to learn a few new things in the coming years, including cement garden sculpture.
